Why blame?

August 27th, 2008

I just read Lloyds post about blaming someone just because a plugin or theme stops working after you’ve upgraded your WordPress install.

First of all, before you upgrade a live site, shouldn’t you test it first? Just to make sure that your theme is still working the way it should, and maybe see if the plugins you’re using are still breathing after you’ve upgraded?

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t upgrade anything until I (somehow) can verify that what I need is still working. Either I test my self, or I use a kinda smart web site that goes by the name of Google to do a search or two. I can even try to visit the plugin/theme authors website/forum to se if there is some news there, and what the heck, I even take a look at these two pages to see if I can track down some news…

What I’m getting at is that the owner of a WordPress install has a great deal of responsibility when it comes to his or her site(s). There are numerous ways to check if a site will survive an upgrade - and if you can’t make out if it will or not - then wait with the upgrade.

If you do upgrade, it’s ultimately your responsibility that your users can access the site afterwards - don’t go blaming anyone else!

And, oh, do remember to do a backup before you upgrade…..

The future of WP-Gravatar

I have a plan. Well I have an idea of a plan.

It’s time for a rewrite of the WP-Gravatar plugin.

What I’d like to do is clean up the code, and delete code that is no longer needed now that WordPress supports Gravatars “Out of the Box”. I’ll also delete some of the options/possibilities the plugin gives. The following features will (most likely) be removed; Read more…
